Looking west along Duval Street at the St. James Hotel before the Great Fire of 1901 (above) and the St. James Building in 2016 (below). Constructed and owned by investors from Connecticut following the Civil War, the hotel contained 500 rooms. After being destroyed by the Great Fire of 1901, the St. James Building was completed to house the Cohen Brother’s department store in 1912. At the time, the department store was the 9th largest in the country. Today, the building serves as Jacksonville’s city hall.
