The Mill District

Adjacent to Saint Anthony Falls, the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi River, Minneapolis developed as a 19th century center for lumber and flour milling. Considered to a part of the larger Downtown East neighborhood, the Mill District is a former industrial area along the Mississippi River featuring historic warehouse lofts and complementary infill mixed-use development.

It is the result of a 1998 City of Minneapolis Historic Mills District Master Plan. Anchored by the Mill City Museum, which is housed in what was once the largest mill in the world, the Mill District is considered the historical and cultural center of the city.

The Milwaukee Road Depot is a former passenger railroad station that was built in 1899. Closed in 1971, the Depot reopened in 2001 as a joint Residence Inn by Marriott/Renaissance Minneapolis Hotel.
