5. Historical architecture at an affordable price

From the late 1800s until the 1960s, Sugar Hill was the neighborhood where Jacksonville’s most prominent African-Americans lived. A prestigious upscale community, Sugar Hill was home to professional African-American families – doctors, lawyers, teachers, bricklayers, ministers, morticians, pullman porters – who developed a commune of comfortable, impressive, spacious homes. Unfortunately, much of Sugar Hill was destroyed by the construction of I-95 and the expansion of UF Health Jacksonville.

However, not all is lost. A small enclave of Sugar Hill’s impressive architecture and walkability exists just west of UF Health Jacksonville. Here, you’ll discover affordable historical residential dwellings on tree lined streets that are just as impressive as what one would come to expect to find in Springfield, Riverside and San Marco.
