4. Edward Waters College and the Obi-Scott-Umunna Collection of African Art

Edward Waters College was founded in 1866 to educate freed former slaves and is the oldest historically black college in Florida. The oldest building on this urban campus is Centennial Hall, which was built in 1916 and designed by Jacksonville’s first known black architect, Richard Lewis Brown.

Centennial Hall contains the Obi-Scott-Umunna Collection of African Art. The Obi-Scott-Umunna Collection features a fascinating assortment of African art from regions north of the Equator. The collection includes masks, pieces made of bronze and carved ivory, musical instruments, and numerous sacred artifacts created by Central and West African peoples.
