Biggie’s Pizza recently opened its second restaurant in Five Points at 1053 Park Street. Now the 40-seat restaurant is expanding to include an adjacent storefront formerly occupied by the Bead Here Now store.

25. Poke Burri

Atlanta-based Poke Burri plans to open a 1,500 square foot restaurant at 2545 Riverside Avenue. Poke Burri is known for build-your-own poke bowls and burrito-sized sushi rolls as well as ring-shaped sushi doughnuts, sushi pizza, and deep-fried sushi corn dogs. This will be the chain’s first location in Jacksonville.

26. MedMen Enterprises

MedMen Enterprises of Los Angeles, the country’s biggest medical marijuana provider, is in the process of opening a medical marijuana dispensary in the former Fans & Stoves building at 1059 Park St. in Five Points. Build-out of the 5,573 square foot space has ceased.

27. 904 Tacos - Street Tacos and Cantina

904 Tacos plans to open at 1068 Park Street this fall. Owned by Jesus and Blanca Valencia, the 2,000 square foot restaurant will serve authentic Mexican food with a full bar.

28. Ortega Park

Ortega Park Master Plan

The redevelopment of Roosevelt Square continues. Originally opening as an open air shopping center in 1961 and converted into an enclosed mall in 1968, Roosevelt was retrofitted back into an open air plaza by Atlanta-based Dewberry Capital Corporation in 1997. Current plans call for revamping the shopping center into a 28.4 acre mixed use development called Ortega Park. As much as 100,536 square feet at the 311,220 square foot shopping center either has been or will be razed soon. 93,275 square feet of new retail and dining space will be added, along with an internal roadway and parking circulation system that will include two roundabouts.

29. Extra Space Storage

Jacksonville-based Silverfield Group Inc. is developing a three-story, 97,000 square foot self storage building for Extra Space Storage at 1195 Edgewood Ave. S. The developer also intends to eventually construct a 4,845 square foot retail space in front of the storage building.

30. Wawa

Now with 160 stores in Florida, two years after opening its first location in Jacksonville, Wawa is preparing to establish its first urban core location in Murray Hill. Wawa is redeveloping the northwest corner of Normandy Boulevard and Cassat Avenue. When complete, the new Wawa will feature a 5,943 square foot store with outdoor seating, 12 pumps, 55 parking spaces and 5 bike rack spaces on the 1.503 acre site.

31. Prospect Wine & Tapas

Prospect Wine & Tapas will be opening at 1521 Margaret Street, the former location of Safe Harbor Seafood Riverside and Marah Brewing Company.

32. Five Points Streetscape

A long planned streetscape project for Five Points is now underway. Centered around the intersection of Park, Margaret and Lomax Streets, the project will widen sidewalks, convert Lomax into a one-way street and result in a more pedestrian friendly atmosphere for the popular district.

33. The Courtyard on College

A partnership between JWB Real Estate Capital and Hart Resources LLC is in the process of developing an infill community named The Courtyard on College. The 1.1 acre project will be designed as a modern bungalow court style community with 19 single family houses.

The Casbah Cafe is in the process of renovating and expanding to include a storefront at 3610 St. Johns Avenue. The new space will be used as a bar.

35. The Lofts at Murray Hill

The Vestcor Companies is in the beginning stages of construction on a new mixed-use development at 840 Edgewood Avenue South. Plans call for the demolition of the former Bank of American property to allow for the construction of 117 multifamily units and 11,000 square feet of ground floor retail space.
