Northwest Quadrant
This quadrant of the neighborhood is home to UF Health Jacksonville, one of the city’s largest medical centers. The medical center’s lineage can be traced back to the 1870s when Jacksonville’s first hospital, the Duval Hospital Asylum, was established in downtown Jacksonville. The Asylum eventually became the Duval Medical Center (DMC). Over the years, two additional hospitals, Methodist and Brewster, developed medical centers adjacent to DMC. In 1999, the medical centers were acquired by Shands HealthCare and merged to become Shands Jacksonville. In 2013, it was renamed UF Health Jacksonville.
