Southwest Quadrant
Home to Hogans Creek and Springfield’s network of parks, the southwest quadrant contains the most public space in the neighborhood. Like the southeast quadrant, it contains some of the neighborhood’s oldest residences, many of which overlook the downtown skyline. On May 12, 1914, the Municipal Zoo opened in this quadrant of Springfield with a red deer fawn as the first animal on exhibit. In January 1916, the Springfield Park zoo consisted of two deer, two wildcats, two coyotes, one black bear, five monkeys, five silver foxes, rabbits, Guinea hens, cranes and squirrels. On July 19, 1925, the zoo moved to a 37.5-acre site on the Trout River where it continues to operate today.
