The long planned expansion of Jacksonville International Airport is moving forward. Currently work is already underway on the expansion of the security checkpoint area, which will include equipment that is roughly twice as fast as the airport’s existing screening technology.
In addition, the airport is preparing to construct a six story, $100 million parking garage to increase parking capacity. Planned for more than 20 years, the new garage will be built adjacent to the current daily garage and include roughly 2,000 spaces and a floor for rental car parking. That project is expected to be completed in two years.
However, the airport’s major and most anticipated part of the expansion plan is the development of Concourse B. Planned to break ground this year, Concourse B will add six additional gates to the terminal. The 165,000 square foot terminal is estimated to cost $300 million and slated for completion in 2025.
