Legislated in 1939, Roosevelt Boulevard was completed in 1950, becoming a new major thoroughfare along the west edge of Venetia. In 1951, at the intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Timuquana Road, the 100,000-square-foot Venetia Village shopping center was completed, providing the neighborhood with a mix of commercial uses within walking distance of its residences. Venetia Village is an example of Art Moderne. This style of architecture is an outgrowth of the Art Deco style and was popular in Florida between the 1930s and 50s.

Named for the Venetia region in northeast Italy, this streetcar suburb’s development began in 1925 by a company headed by Dr. Raymond Turck. Turck was the chief surgeon of St. Luke’s Hospital between 1910 and 1916. Most of Venetia’s streets have Italian names such as Garibaldi Avenue, after the Italian nationalist.

The Florida Yacht Club relocated to Venetia in 1927. Established with seventeen charter members led by New York financier William Backhouse Astor, Jr., in 1877, the Florida Yacht Club is the oldest social club in the city, and fourth oldest surviving yacht club in the U.S.
