Mid-century Modern is the dominant style of residential architecture in Lakewood. Popular between 1945 and 1969, Mid-century Modern was an American design movement in urban development, architecture, graphic, interior, and product design that was a reflection of the International and Bauhaus movements.
With the goal of bringing modernism into post-war suburbs, the Mid-century Modern style emphasized residences with ample windows and open floor plans, with the intention of opening up interior spaces and bringing the outdoors in.
Lakewood is also home to a large collection of Mid-century Ranch style residences. This style allowed for Mid-century construction methods and aesthetics while accommodating modern living features such as attached garages and open kitchens.
