Currently, FDOT is in the process of conducting a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study for the $170 million expansion of Interstate 95 between Interstate 10 and Beaver Street through LaVilla. The intent of the project is to improve safety, capacity, and overall traffic operations in order to accommodate future population and economic growth throughout Duval County.
According to FDOT, Interstate 95 is a major north-south corridor in Duval County for commuters, tourists and freight traffic. It connects employment centers in Downtown Jacksonville, Southpoint, and Baymeadows Center to residential communities in southern Duval County. I-95 is also a major freight corridor and carries goods and commodities shipped through seaports and airports. It was last widened in 1999 and no major capacity improvements have taken place in over 20 years.
Proposed improvements include adding up to two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, deck replacement and rehabilitation of the Myrtle Avenue Bridge, and intersection and roadway improvements at Church Street, Beaver Street, and West Union Street. If designed in an inclusive and equitable manner, the project offers the opportunity to assist in the revitalization of LaVilla and serve as an improved gateway into the urban core. Construction is anticipated to start in 2023.
