Historic Preservation
Like many American cities, Charlotte embraced discriminatory urban renewal policies and programs of the 20th century. In fact, it virtually demolished the lion’s share of its historic building stock, including an entire historic urban African-American district. While Charlotte is nationally known for the successful revitalization of Uptown, it lacks the strong unique identity and sense of place that comes with communities that embrace adaptive reuse as a part of their redevelopment plans.
