4. Peterbrooke Chocolatier
Peterbrooke Chocolatier transforms the art of fine European chocolate making into a truly American experience by combining the very best ingredients and old world techniques with a variety of all-American treats. Established by Phyllis Geiger in 1983 and named after her two children, Peterbrooke has become a staple for Jacksonville’s sweets lovers. The company’s impressive list of chocolate sweets include decadent truffles, caramels and cherry cordials, chocolate covered cookies, pretzels, popcorn and strawberries.
Recently, the company expanded its operations with a new 28,000 square-foot candy-making factory in Jacksonville’s Mixontown neighborhood. By the end of 2016, Peterbrooke anticipates being open for tours and events. Highlights of the candy making tour will include a look at “Big John”, a giant vat that holds 3,000 pounds of constantly churning melted chocolate. Visitors will also learn about the manufacturing process from cocoa bean to chocolate bar. If that doesn’t make you hungry enough, Peterbrooke’s tour will also expose visitors to the company’s bakery.
